Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of Hospice and very important members of the Hospice Care Team.  All volunteers, no matter which area they serve in, make a significant difference in the lives of our patients and their families. If you have a compassionate nature, are a good listener, have an altruistic desire to serve others, and the ability to make a commitment, then you will certainly make a good volunteer for Hospice of Frederick County!

Volunteer Opportunities:

Direct Service volunteers work directly with terminally ill patients and their families.  Some of the needs could include:

  • Offering companionship to patients and/or their caregivers.
  • Providing respite for caregivers so they can get a break or catch up on personal things.
  • Provide purposeful watch at the bedside of patients, serving as a comforting presence and/or as an advocate.
  • Offer various services such as transportation, light housekeeping, assisted feeding, run errands, pet care, etc.

Natural Health volunteers offer services that provide patients with ‘good feelings’ and help alleviate stress and anxiety:

  • Massage Therapists
  • Reiki Practitioners
  • Comfort Pets
  • Music Comfort

Bereavement volunteers work directly with grieving individuals via mailings, phone calls and eventually via support group facilitation.

Administrative volunteers work in the Hospice office with general office work and projects.

Fundraising and Community Support volunteers work out in the community in a variety of ways:

  • Hosting booths at fairs and other events distributing Hospice materials and/or answering questions.
  • Speaking on behalf of Hospice at speaking engagements.
  • Making phone calls to local businesses for donations for our annual fundraisers.
  • Participating on a special fundraising committee to help prepare for upcoming fundraisers.
  • Helping at the fundraisers with set-up, serving, distributing items, etc.

Each type of volunteering has its own special trainings and requirements.  Please contact the Volunteer Department for details delizabeth@fmh.org or call 240-566-3038.
